Legend & History of Origami – Senbazuru
Senbazuru literally means a thousand cranes, in Japan the crane is considered a mythical animal believed to live for a thousand years. It became a symbol of good luck & long life, also symbolized fidelity as when two cranes mate they are loyal and are mates for life until they die.
Although the art of folding paper originated in China and brought to Japan in the 6th century, it wasn’t until around the 18th century that the folding paper was mass produced in Japan that it’s popularity flourished and is known today as “origami “. After one has completed the 1,000 origami cranes then the sacred crane will grant his or her wish.
